Social Emotional Learning
During the block of time for SEL (Social Emotional Learning), the sophomores sang some of America’s holiday favorites to the residents of Clayberg Fulton County Nursing Home on Friday,
December 7. The students contributed to the well-being of their school and community and also evaluated their involvement in the activity of singing to the residents of Clayberg Fulton County Nursing Home (Illinois Learning Standards – Goal 2: 3C – SEL). Listed below are students’ descriptions of their experiences and comments revealed during reflection writing:
· I’m sure the people at the home really enjoyed having us there, and I was glad to be there.
· My personal feelings were that I hope the visit made their day because it made me happy to see their faces light up.
· They clapped, and I felt good.
· I thought it was good that we went and sang to them.
· I felt happy because we were making them happy.
· I like singing to the elderly, and hope we do the activity as a sophomore class again.
· I even heard some of them say someone looked like their grandson which might have brought back good memories. Overall, I think this was a great experience, and I would love to do it again.
· One older lady was crying, and I thought that it was good because she enjoyed our singing. I love what we did and would absolutely love to do it again next year. I very much enjoy going and visiting elders. It makes them feel like we do care and love them.
· I enjoyed going out there and singing to them. It made me very happy to see them so joyful and ecstatic.
· They loved having us sing and just to feel special that we took time to go sing and give them cards. When that lady was crying, it made me think of how she must feel being in a nursing home away from her family and friends. So I’m thankful they loved the experience as much as I did.
· I know they don’t see young kids often so it was a good experience. I think we should continue doing this because everyone was happy.
· Mostly the people listening were awesome to listen to us sing.
· This meant bringing happiness and joy to those who don’t get out or have visitors often. I enjoyed singing to them and seeing their smiles and looks on some people’s faces. They really enjoyed us coming in and singing.
· I had a lot of fun. I could just tell that they loved having us there. It was just a great way to start out the people at the nursing home’s day.
· It made them happy to see young people who came just to sing for them. Really what we did was give to the community and to bring joy to the people who don’t get to see new faces every day.
· I appreciate the fact the school can get more involved and help bring a smile to some of those who might need it. A visit from the youth is a heart-warming experience for the elderly even
if that visit just included stretching your vocal chords. I know some students enjoyed the visit just as much as the people who live and work in the nursing home.
· Singing made me feel happy for once in two years. I haven’t sung in front of anyone for one year.
· I think we should keep doing this and maybe in the summer or spring do something else for them.
· Singing helped a lot of us to express our feelings about the holidays and Christmas spirit, and I think the people at the nursing home really enjoyed the students.
· Singing at the nursing home was a good experience. I could tell it made the residents feel better, which made me feel good for doing it. A lot of them can’t leave the nursing home and don’t get many visitors, so it was special.
· They don’t get visitors very often so to me it felt very good to see those people happy.
· It meant a lot to the older people, and they probably enjoyed it very much. Having them sing along and smile is just enjoying to see.
· One of the ladies said on our way out that we just brought spirit to her day.
· When I was handing out the cards, a woman in the front row was crying. I’m not sure why, but it
broke my heart. I love elderly people, and I hope to sometime do the activity again.
· I loved singing to the people. It meant a lot to me, and I have a grandmother that is in the nursing
home in Lewistown. It made me so over-joyed to sing to them.
· There were some ladies in particular that had a huge, huge smile on their faces singing along, and that made it all worthwhile to me. I enjoyed singing for them because they got so much joy out of it, and I realized that these people don’t get visitors of our age that often, so that also made it more worth it and more worthwhile.
· I felt people needed some attention, and they needed some Christmas spirit. It makes them feel special and needed and wanted.
· I noticed that some of the patients were singing along and smiling. This made me feel like I was doing a good thing for them.
